Índio, indígena ou nativo americano são nomes dados aos habitantes humanos da América antes da chegada dos europeus, e os seus descendentes atuais. A hipótese mais aceita para a sua origem é que os primeiros habitantes da América tenham vindo da Ásia atravessando a pé o Estreito de Bering, no final da idade do gelo, há 12 mil anos. O termo "índio" provém do facto de que Cristóvão Colombo, quando chegou à América, estava convencido de que tinha chegado à Índia, haja vista que o gentílico espanhol para a pessoa nativa da Índia é índio, e dessa maneira chamou os povos indígenas que ali encontrou. Por essa razão também, ainda hoje se refere às ilhas do Caribe como Índias Ocidentais. Mais tarde, estes povos foram considerados uma raça distinta e também foram apelidados de peles vermelhas. O termo ameríndio é usado para designar os nativos do continente americano, em substituição às palavras "índios", "indígenas" e outras consideradas preconceituosas.

Native Americans - Documentary about their culture and spirituality
The indigenous peoples of the Americas are the pre-Columbian inhabitants of North and South America, their descendants, and many ethnic groups who identify with those peoples. They are often also referred to as Native Americans, Aboriginals, First Nations, and (by Christopher Columbus' geographic mistake) Indians, later disambiguated as Red Indians, American Indians, Amerindians, Amerinds, and by unique tribal citizenry. According to the New World migration model, a migration of humans from Eurasia to the Americas took place via Beringia, a land bridge which connected the two continents across what is now the Bering Strait. The most recent point at which this migration could have taken place is c. 12,000 years ago, with the earliest period remaining a matter of some unresolved contention. These early Paleo-Indians soon spread throughout the Americas, diversifying into many hundreds of culturally distinct nations and tribes. According to the oral histories of many of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, they have been living there since their genesis, described by a wide range of traditional creation accounts.
